"While Adult obesity seems to be leveling off, the pace still lends itself to a growth rate of 4% over the next 20 years; at the same time childhood obesity is reaching epidemic proportions. At the 2012 Weight of the Nation convention, the Centers for Disease Control presented sobering statistics regarding the level of obesity in the nation, and offered recommendations that can be implemented in schools and places of employment to help people achieve a healthier weight. The concern stems from the prediction that if we continue to gain weight at our current pace, 40% of Americans will be overweight or obese by 2030. Even more staggering, the Institute of Medicine presented concerns that nearly every single American will be overweight or obese by 2048. One of the major concerns is childhood obesity. Obese children are very likely to grow up to be obese adults, and obese adults place a financial strain on the health-care system because of their increased need for tests, medications, and interventions with regard to their weight. A recent study found that to stem the tide of childhood obesity, an individual would need to cut an average of 64 calories from their day, whether via dietary restriction or increased physical activity." -Article from the National Council on Strength and Fitness, Stats from the CDC.
